Summary

Six panel comic strip shows Prince Valiant, son of the King of Thule, and a companion arriving at an old Celtic temple, the refuge of an outlaw named Ruy. They contemplate the fortifications in a castle in a valley below. That night, Prince Valiant is awakened by an old bearded man who reveals himself to be Merlin. Hal Foster, who drew the Tarzan Sunday page, created Prince Valiant, an adventure story laid in the days of King Arthur, in 1937. The cartoon, which appeared only in color on Sundays, was notable for its realistic drawings and meticulous historical accuracy. Foster died in 1972, but the strip, written and drawn by other artists, continues to be published in more than 300 newspapers.
